You just found out that your girlfriend had run away with the ugly dude from HR. Then you realized she has taken away your only Mac with her. Now you have this super duper Ryzen beast that you just have to hack since, like, yesterday.

No worries! I will tell you how to make a FULL macOS Catalina USB installer with OpenCore bootloader, all using the Windows environment. There are many reasons why you would want a full flash drive-based installation package.

Software Needed

Paragon Partition Manager (download)

Paragon HFS+ for Windows (download) [Good for 15 days trial.]

gibMacOS (download)

Bootdisk Utility (download)

PreparationSolid edge mac os x download.

You need at least a 16GB flash drive. Use Paragon Partition Manager (hereinafter referred to as PPM) to “clean” the 16GB flash drive, i.e., no hidden files or partition, single partition and formatted with FAT 32. (Failure to do so will mess up gibMacOS install process next.)

First, download the full macOS Catalina installation package. To download these, use gibMacOS.bat command. Follow Technolli’s YouTube tutorial, if you are new to this. Note where these files are downloaded. It should be in the gibMacOS’ subdirectory (macOS Downloads/public release/061-44387-10.15.3 macOS Catalina, or similar).

Insert the flash drive and run gibMacOS’ MakeInstall.bat command. How? Follow Luis Ceja’s YouTube tutorial, if you are unsure. Upon completion, the flash drive will contain the OpenCore bootloader, its EFI directory/files, and the macOS’ recovery package.

Important Task!
While gibMacOS is writing the installer (above; 15 minutes), you have to copy a temporary file (it will disappear once gibMacOS completes its task). Notice the screen below. The first line is the location of the temporary file, “4.hfs”. Navigate to that directory (you may have to set “show hidden files” in File Explorer) and copy the file to another location. You will use this file later.

Having properly configured the OpenCore bootloader, you can now use this flash drive to start your macOS installation in a would-be Hackintosh machine. Using this you will reach the Recovery/macOS utilities stage (pic below) but if you want to continue installation your PC must be able to connect to the internet (and download an additional 6-7 GB of files).

However this is not what we are satisfied with here; we want the full mother inside the flash drive.

Start PPM. (If you don’t see your flash drive in PPM, take out and reinsert.) Notice the flash drive is in two partitions: the small bootloader and a 1.22GB macOS Base System partition. From the Operations menu select “Change Drive” and assign a drive letter (any letter will do) to the macOS Base System partition. Colin mcrae dirt 2 download mac. Next, format this drive (not the bootloader part!) as HFS (only HFS!). Close PPM. Start HFS+ for Windows, and make sure the flash drive is mounted. (Note: HFS+ allows you to see Apple’s HFS-formatted disks.)

Start Bootdisk Utility. This is what you will see (pic below).

Select the partition (which you have assigned a drive letter and formatted in HFS). Note: DO NOT select the whole flash drive. Click the “Restore” button, and navigate to and choose the “4. hfs” file you have saved earlier. Close Boot disk utility after Restore is finished.

Start PPM. This is how your USB installer drive looks now with 3 partitions (pic below [ScanDisk Ultra USB Device]).

Select the middle partition (macOS Base System) and choose “Move or Resize” from the Operations menu. Next, drag the resize handle to as far right as possible, and click “Resize Now”. Now we have enough GB space (must be 10GB or more) to build/reconstitute the full installer. Examine the contents of the drive (pic below). Note the “Install MacOS Catalina.app”. This is where we will build the full installation package next.

Go to the gibMacOS’ subdirectory (“/macOS Downloads/public release/061-44387-10.15.3 macOS Catalina”, or similar) where the full list of installation files you have downloaded earlier.

Create a folder called “SharedSupport” in the download folder (/macOS Downloads/public release/061-44387-10.15. 3 macOS Catalina”), and copy:

InstallESDDmg.pkg, and

to that folder.

After the copy is complete, go to that folder, rename InstallESDDmg.pkg to InstallESD.dmg.

Open up InstallInfo.plist in Notepad and replace this:

Important Note: This example is for Catalina. The strings above will be different if you are working with earlier or different versions of macOS.


Now copy the SharedSupport folder you’ve created to “Install macOS Catalina.app/Contents”.

You have now a full-bodied Install macOS Catalina.app! It’s still in your HDD so copy this baby to replace the similarly-named app inside your USB flash drive. Note: This 7GB transfer WILL take some time. Meanwhile go find your lost girlfriend and plead back…for your Mac (she can stay with the ugly guy!).

Note: If you are unable to use HFS+ for Windows (15 days trial only), use Transmac instead to copy.

Of course if you have a Mac or a Hackintosh you can download the full installer from the Apple App store, or build it using gib macOS’ BuildmacOSInstallApp.command.

Also, while I have used Catalina and OpenCore here as examples, you can use gibMacOS to download other macOS versions, as well as Clover as the bootloader.

After properly configuring the bootloader (OpenCore/Clover), you have now a full-bodied macOS Catalina flash drive-based installer. And it is assured clean as only downloads from Apple are (unlike downloads from distros, other third party servers or personal uploads).
